• Classes will run between 7 and 9:30 PM every Thursday between July 2-August 20, with a 15 minute tea break relatively in the middle of each class. 
  • The code to get in the front door is 2-3-1.  If you forget, you can call Yoga Mala's front desk at (306) 352-9642.
  • Parking is not abundant so please come a bit early to make sure you get a spot.  Registration starts at 6:30 on the first day, and then we'll start our first meditation at 7 PM sharp.

Introductions

Meditation: Let's go!  What is it, and what are the benefits?

Exercise: Write your own obituary.  This exercise comes from the 5 O'Clock Club, a popular American job-finding organization.  This is the first exercise everyone has to do when they join, and it's brilliant for helping the mind focus in on what's important in your life.

Learnings: The historical context for this class: Egypt as the birthplace of western civilization

The Cosmos of the Ancient People: A Map, A Metaphor, and a Mystery of Mythological Proportions

 

at the end of this class, you will:

  • get why Erin is so obsessed with the breath and have spent some time sensing into your own breath.
  • know what a national-treasure-from-another-country Neil deGrasse Tyson is as he explains to us our special relationship to the cosmos
  • get a better understanding of how the first peoples understood the night sky

Meditation: Breath awareness- how the first peoples understood the cycle of the moon as a breath, one of the first metaphors for inner change.

Exercise: Group exploration of some astrological principles

Learnings: What we know about pre-civilization people; how the Greeks came to give personalities to the heavenly bodies.

Week 3

flow: "The issues are in the tissues"

at the end of this class, you will:

  • be over the idea of feelings being "girly". (Although you'll be able to contrast that with Carl Jung's male and female archetypes)
  • get the connection between yoga and your emotional health
  • have learned about the [relatively recent] history of the Enneagram from Evagrius Ponticus (4th century AD) to Don Riso and Russ Hudson (21st century)

Meditation: Emotion awareness and the neurobiology of the phrase, "the issues are in the tissues".

Exercise: Repeating questions in pairs.  Repeating questions are often used to peel back the layers of the unconscious. 

Learnings:

  1. The mystics and their teachings on flow
  2. The Enneagram and the politics of the early Christian church

going underground with the enneagram: nine unconscious footpaths that lead up to the conscious realm

at the end of this class, you will:

  • learn about the nine personality types in the Enneagram
  • start to get an idea of which one you most identify with
  • recognize a new level of connection you have with people who are very different than you

Meditation: Thought awareness; Past/Present/Future

Exercises: Exercises will be a part of the workshop

Learnings: Nine patterns hidden in plain sight that, once you see, you can't unsee.  The Enneagram as "an exquisite map" of the human psyche, and an underground footpath that leads up to the conscious realm for you to grow in emotional intelligence.

Week 5

Symbols, patterns, and math

(Part 2 of the Enneagram Series)

at the end of this class, you will:

  • understand how the Law of Three applies to your life
  • have a better appreciation for where our numbers come from, and what happens when a popular leading philosopher decides to ignore a glaring piece of scientific evidence
  • be able to take apart the Enneagram symbol and describe the meaning of its three components

Meditation: Body-scanning exercises

Exercise: Gestalt/Stream of consciousness

Learnings: Plato and the divine forms, how ancient Greece adopted the base-ten numerical system we use today, why it took them to long to adopt the zero, and the law of Three.

Fear and Love: where the footpaths meet the ocean

(part 3 of the enneagram series)

At the end of this class, you will:

  • Get a glimpse of how every single one of your actions arises from one particular fear
  • Start to feel a whole lot less judgemental towards yourself and a replace that with compassion
  • See how this inner work is a lifelong journey.  This is not a bikini beach season course.

Meditation: Heartfulness via the Buddhists, and the neuroscience behind being your own best friend

Exercise: Monologues in pairs.  Monologues, like repeating questions, are used in mystical traditions to unfold the layers of the onion of your consciousness.

Learnings: The deep end of the Enneagram pool.

the company you keep: individuality and groups

At the end of this class, you will:

  • Be familiar with the three instincts: social, sexual, and self-preservation
  • have gotten a chance to sense into your body while in an uncomfortable situation where usually your body numbs out
  • be able to put "The Big Two-and-Two" together- how knowing yourself improves emotional intelligence and leadership capacity

Meditation: Heartfulness towards others/ Interpersonal connections

Exercise: Slow-Then-Normal Party.  Or think of it as a networking event and bring your business cards.  Whatever social occasion you want to work on the most.  This is a meditative exploration of your subtle internal reactions to the cravings and aversions we have as social creatures and as individuals.  There will be wine and cheese, and don't worry, the pace will pick up after we've debriefed.

Week 8

movie night and graduation: your inner work back in its historical context

at the end of this class, you will:

  • further appreciate your deep connection to your fellow members of the human race
  • have more insight into Egypt's historical contribution to the Western tradition.
  • have gotten a bird's eye view of the purpose of inner work in the context of the challenges the world faces today.

Meditation: For today's meditation, we'll be acting it out instead of sitting through it.  See exercise below.

Exercise: It's a surprise!  But it will tie everything that we've been learning together- from Egypt to relationships to your inner attunement.

Learnings: Your inner work in its historical, scientific, environmental, social and economic context.  Bring comfy clothes and pillows because this is movie night.  Popcorn provided.
